Tani Mo Jẹ́? is a children’s book written by Bolanle Ogunnaike. It aims to help children to be more aware of who they are and how they treat others, and my accompanying illustrations follow one character and his diverse group of family and friends as they interact with each other and their surroundings in a kind and thoughtful way. The book is written in both English and Yoruba, inspired by Bolanle’s struggle to find fun, educational Yoruba children’s books in the UK. I hope it will allow children from various backgrounds, with any level of skill in these languages, to identify with its characters and expand their knowledge of the world in some way.

As I previously knew very little about the Yoruba language and culture, this job has been an incredibly enjoyable and insightful learning experience and I made sure that I had Bolanle’s thorough guidance, direction and approval to ensure that I did justice to the Yoruba elements incorporated into the story. Embracing this kind of learning and practice is a key responsibility to me.
